Chapter 15
Translated by Virgilio212 and proofread by ZenBuu
Buu looked around, a look of pure fury on his face. He had been wandering the planet for two hours, searching for a solution to unmask the villain who had set up this ambush against him. Mad with rage, he ravaged the planet in his path, cooling himself down as best he could.
He didn’t know where to start. He didn’t know the wizards’ identities, their origins, or their appearance. In his panic, he had hurriedly slaughtered them and could no longer interrogate them. All that was left was that piece of cloth he had picked up earlier, the last trace of those wretched wizard vermin’s passage through the living world.
He looked at it with bitterness and disgust, wondering if his magical powers would be of any use in such a situation. Even his own abilities seemed like a mystery that he knew nothing about. It frustrated him as much as it exulted him that he did not know the full extent of his abilities.
He threw the piece of cloth a little way off and stretched out his crest, exclaiming: — Become your owner, alive and well!
A mauve-colored beam struck the fabric, which... decomposed, under Buu's irritated eyes. Apparently, he couldn't revive the dead or create a copy of them, with their original personalities and memories. And, seeing the ashes of the material, he cursed himself internally for not having tried something less risky, like revealing the individual's memories or getting a simple answer. All he seemed to be able to do was heal wounds and transform whatever he wanted into another object. He wasn't as powerful and versatile as he thought.
The Djinn let out a cry of rage and swung the air sharply in front of him, his palm open. The hundreds of giant trees in front of him disappeared, torn apart by the violence of his gesture, and gave way to a great cloud of smoke and red flames, followed by the enormous uproar caused by a gigantic explosion. Buu no longer cared about this world and its resources. His very survival was threatened. And that was intolerable.
He had no clue, no way to predict a future attack... He was defenseless and more vulnerable than ever... and he could no longer interrogate the wizards now that they were dead.
...Dead? But of course!
Buu suddenly had an illumination through Son Gokû's memories about the afterlife and King Enma. It didn't matter whether they were alive or dead... they were always within reach! He himself was beyond the concept of life and death, and could access both worlds without difficulty. The Djinn laughed happily, rejoicing that even in the afterlife, his victims could not escape him. And since he himself was not dead, Enma would not hold him back. Nothing could stop him.
Buu imagined King Enma's office and instantly teleported to the world of the dead. He appeared before the red-skinned giant, who jumped up so violently that he fell backwards, causing the entire building to shake. Around Buu, employees in white jackets lost their balance in shock, while the small white clouds that were the souls of the dead retreated dizzily. They were not afraid of the Djinn they had not even noticed, but rather of the general tremor that almost knocked them off the platform.
Buu scoffed as the giant struggled to recover, sweat dripping down his broad crimson forehead. He looked at the intruder with worried, resentful eyes, and muttered in an anxious voice: — "You! What are you doing here!? You have no right to be here!"
The Djinn smiled, making the sweaty giant shiver. He delighted in terrifying the guardian of the world of the dead who, although he was all-powerful in the face of any soul that lost its life, was ultimately weaker than a mere Kaioh in the face of a living being. Especially face to face.
He hissed softly, walking innocently as he watched King Enma out of the corner of his eye. The latter had his fists clenched, but he didn’t dare to provoke him any further.
— "Hehe..." — whispered the pink demon, whose eyes shone with amusement. — "Don't be so afraid, Your Majesty! I'm just paying you a courtesy visit. Since I possess your great hero, Son Goku, it's only natural that I honor him with my homage! And then... perhaps you could help me..."
A bulging vein appeared on Enma's forehead, and he shouted angrily: — "There's no way I'm going to help a scoundrel who's causing me so much trouble! The dead have been piling up for months because of you, you're far worse than that tyrant Frieza back then! So die once and for all and you'll see the fate I have in store for you!"
A dark shadow stealthily obscured the Djinn’s gaze, whose eyes shone with a red light. Two thin beams passed over Enma, flawlessly cutting through the wall of the building behind him. The structure collapsed, leaving him speechless.
— "I advise you not to oppose me, King Enma," — Buu hissed angrily. — "You’ll give me a hand, or believe me, it won’t be bricks I destroy next time.”
Before the giant could say anything, Buu turned back to the line of ghosts watching them, terrified. These dead souls were so pathetic, desperately waiting for their place in heaven or hell. He was so tired of it... but he reveled in the thought that Son Gohan and the others would be deprived of it forever. They now belonged to a much nobler cause... his conquest over life and death! Focusing on his goal now, he scanned the immense stream of souls that continued into the endless horizon of the sea of clouds. There were thousands, millions of souls waiting for the judgment of their eternity. His own victims were quite recent, so they should be at the end of the line. However, he quickly reached the limit of his perception and felt that the tail was still extremely long. He didn’t have the patience to search.
He stomped his foot hard on the ground, breaking the tiles. Enma flinched as Buu turned to him with an angry look. — "So, it's time to do your part. I'm looking for the wizards I killed a little over two hours ago. Brutal deaths, decapitation and all. They're in this line. Bring them to me now!" — "Are you... are you kidding?" — Enma stammered, clenching his fist. — "They’re nowhere near me, I don’t know anything about them, don’t count on me to find them. And I won’t help you. You don’t belong here, only the dead have the right to be in this world. Disappear and leave the dead alone. You’re already causing enough damage on the physical plane."
This time, Buu did not hide his annoyance. The expression on his face changed from anger to pure hatred. He began to levitate several meters above the ground, in front of the terrified eyes of the guardian and his minions. A dazzling mauve aura emanated around him, crackling lightning exploding from him to strike the surroundings. King Enma hid behind his desk, while Buu let out a shrill and disproportionately powerful scream. The color of the clouds and the eternal sky of the world of the dead split into sparks of dark blue and crimson, making it seem as if the universe beyond was completely shattering. Buu fixed his frustrated gaze on the cowering souls and reached out to the first one. Suddenly, he sprayed it with an overwhelming wave of energy, the tiny white particles fading into tiny dust. The other dead fled in terror, while Buu looked back at the paralyzed King Enma. He raised his arm in the air and created a monumental ball of energy that grew rapidly and exponentially. It looked like an enormous planet towering over the tiny reception hall.
While King Enma was paralyzed with fear, Buu shouted in a threatening tone: — "Lying to me is the worst mistake you can make. I can read minds and decipher the most common signs. Every dead soul is in your power. If you refuse to obey me, I will destroy your miserable existential plan once and for all! Goodbye to the dead, goodbye to paradise, and most of all, goodbye to eternity! So, bring them to me... IMMEDIATELY!!!"
The energy ball enveloped itself in powerful lightning, and this convinced King Enma, who fell to his knees in front of Buu, with his hands on the ground, in complete despair.
— "O... of course!" — he begged. — "I... understand, I will bring them to you, but... stop this madness! You will cause an irreparable disaster if you destroy everything! The balance will be broken forever!!"
Reluctant at first, Buu listened to reason and slowly made the energy sphere disappear until it was reduced to tiny dust in the palm of his hand. He made it disappear and returned to the ground, looking at the giant who was still kneeling in front of him. He glared at him and said angrily: — "Go now."
The giant obeyed and, trembling, sat behind his desk, putting it back in place, picking up his notebooks and hammer. Shaken and resigned, he closed his eyes, tense, and hit the table with his large tool. Immediately, several ghostly souls appeared in a line in front of the Djinn. Without having seen Buu yet, the little clouds shouted among themselves: — "But what madness was this? Where are we?" — "There was lightning everywhere, it was scary!" — "And that scream, it was horrible... it even reminded me of Buu!" — "Shut up! He traumatized me, did you see how he killed us?" — "We failed, but let it go, others will take care of him, we will be fine in Paradise, that's what he assured us, after all..."
Buu coughed, startling the souls who turned to him. Surprised at first, the souls felt a deep sense of dread rise up in them. If they weren't already so pale, they would undoubtedly be deathly livid.
— "B... Bu... Bubu..." — "BUU!"
Without wasting a moment, Buu reached out and grabbed all the souls, wrapping them around his elongated limb. In an instant, the wizards were trapped and immobilized. He lifted them slightly off the ground, keeping them firmly attached. After silently observing the panicked souls for a few moments, he hissed softly: — "So, these are the worms... you thought you could go after the dangerous 'Majin Buu' and get away with it, huh? You thought it was a good idea to try to seal me? You thought death would protect you if you failed? Is that what gave you the courage?"
Before giving them a chance to respond, he sent a powerful electric current through his arm that struck the dead wizards, causing them immense pain. Hearing their pathetic little screams reminded him of Babidi's abject screams and it gave Buu an intense satisfaction, but also a certain contempt.
— "You had the audacity to try to imprison me, like that filthy wizard who served as my master. But I'm no longer that Buu who gets angry over nothing, I've learned to have mercy and clemency. So, I'll give you a chance. Tell me first how you knew about that damn spell. Right now!" — "N... no!" — one of the souls cried in a frightened little voice. — "We swore... our oath..."
Buu tightened his grip on the impertinent soul, which choked on a small cry of agony.
— "The lack of air won't kill him, but I can suffocate him forever, no problem" — Buu growled. — "Still have nothing to say? — Aaah
.. that won’t make me give in..."
Buu released the ghost, but before it could hit the ground, his arm quickly extended. The soul suddenly disintegrated before the frightened gazes of his companions. The Djinn turned his cruel eyes to the survivors: — "I copied this technique from an abominable being I faced on Earth. I can destroy you with a single move, there is no more heaven for you, not even hell. Only the total removal of your existence. You know what you still need to do." — "We... we have no guarantee that you will leave us alone after-"
Before finishing the sentence, the speaking soul in turn disappeared with another gesture from Buu who was losing his patience. Around them, Enma and everyone else didn't dare to move, terrified by the spectacle they were watching. — "Okay, okay!!" — shouted the next ghost. — "We went to the planet Icarion, its library has entire archives on the history of the universe, and sections reserved for magic. We worked for several months, and with the help of our boss, we managed to reconstruct a spell faithful to Bibidi's in order to trap you!" — "Hmm... I see" — Buu said, frowning. — "Icarion..."
Putting that information aside, Buu reached out his hand again and pulverized the ghost who just replied. The others shuddered. —"But... but he had spoken!!" — exclaimed one of them. — "Yes, and he did his job. But I want to play a little!" — Buu mocked with a mischievous glint in his eyes. — "There are still four of you. I have three questions pending. Whoever answers the fastest will be spared, and one of the others will be destroyed forever. The last one standing will be able to talk to the big oaf back there. So, are you ready?"
The four wizards looked at each other in fear. They were all bound by a magical oath sworn by their employer, should they be taken prisoner. But they all believed that they would have a place in heaven if they failed. Faced with the fate that awaited them, only the survival of their souls mattered. Every man for himself.
Buu glared at King Enma, who continued to tremble. He had already gotten what he wanted, so there was no need to try to appear threatening anymore. After all... he was no longer a psychopathic monster. He was a more... refined creature. Buu stretched his crest towards the ground. A purple beam surrounded the entire building, which reappeared as good as new, without the marks of explosions or cracks. King Enma looked around in awe.
— "Let that serve as thanks," — Buu muttered before teleporting away with the ghosts.
A few seconds later, they reappeared on the snake path. Buu hadn't thought of a better place to be alone with those souls. If he returned to the physical plane with his captives, he didn't know what would happen to them, since they weren't allowed to leave the world of the dead. At least here he had something to threaten them with. Like condemning them to hell, destroying them... Buu watched the worms with an amused and determined look. — "Okay, let's start over, shall we? Questions for a survivor! So, um... are there any other sorcerers preparing to attack me? How many of you are conspiring against me?"
The wizards remained silent, clinging to their last shred of loyalty. Buu sighed and generated another electric shock that caused immense screams of pain from the tortured spirits. — "I have a way to make you suffer for all eternity, if I want to. You will be mere empty, traumatized rags for the rest of your afterlife existence, and I don't care if that's the end for you either. If you don't dance to the music, you will survive, but your spirits will be extinguished. Now I repeat my question: how many?" — "Tw... twenty!" — cried one of the ghosts. — "We were a brotherhood of seven powerful wizards and we had twenty apprentices who are training now, and who would take over if we died!" — "Traitor, what are you doing? You're giving him our students!" — one of his comrades exclaimed angrily.
The latter disappeared at the end of his sentence, pulverized by Buu who gave a great satisfied laugh. The last ghosts shuddered in horror, while the Djinn laughed louder and louder. — "Haha, I really like this game! I love watching them panic to try to save their miserable lives! So be it, I'll keep my word to the winner!"
Upon further reflection, Buu realized that there was a much easier way to get the answers he was looking for. It was so obvious that it didn't even hit him right away. But he had a brilliant idea and let out a sadistic smile.
— "Perfect, let's continue!" — he exclaimed happily. — "Next question: where are your students? In which world did you prepare your miserable ambush?" — "As for that... you can die waiting to hear it, until you rot" — one of the last ghosts managed to sigh. — "They're with the boss, and none of us will tell you" — "And another disappearance, wow!" — Buu laughed, retracting the arm he had just extended. — "Ultimately, wizards are stupid worms. They even fit in with my little game: who is your boss and where is he? Whoever pulls out the final piece will be entitled to 'Paradise'!"
The two souls silently watched each other, terrified. They were close comrades, bound by an oath of loyalty. Their leader was someone extraordinary, whom they could not possibly have the slightest intention of betraying. The problem... was that this Buu was far more terrifying than they had expected. They had expected to fail in their goal and lose their lives, but they never thought they would be threatened in the otherworld! They faced a plague too powerful to defeat. Neither their leader nor his students would ever be able to defeat him. They had to face the facts and accept their fate. If they did not defy him, he would leave them alone in death. It was their only option. — "The Kaioshin!" — the one on the right exclaimed at full speed, stopping his stunned colleague from speaking. — "He's in his celestial realm, along with our students, he's preparing them to attack you! Okay, now let me survive, please!"
A thin beam shot out from Buu's eyes to pierce the soul that had just released the final information, and disintegrated it without any remorse. The last remaining soul trembled so much that Buu felt his entire arm tremble as well.
"I've changed my mind," he said, his expression mean and veiled in a dark crease. "I can't stand cowards who want to save their lives at all costs. The Kaioshin, huh..."
He turned his eyes to the last ghost, who was literally shaking in fear.
— "Good!" — exclaimed the Djinn with joy. — "You are the ultimate winner! You have earned the right to rest in peace..."
The ghost let out a short sigh.
— "...let me absorb you!" — Buu finished with a cruel sneer.
His arm turned into a thick jelly that covered the ghost. He let out a scream that was quickly stifled and disappeared into nothingness, along with his spirit. Buu had already assimilated Vegeta, a dead man from beyond. So he was sure that he could absorb all the dead equally if he wanted to. He could have gotten the answers that way, by absorbing all the wizards. But he was driven by anger and the need to have fun. One was enough for him. It gave him ideas for fun activities in the future. By looking through his prisoner's memories, he was able to verify that all the information he extracted from them was true.
— "The old dean of the gods, huh?" — Buu thought aloud. — "I had forgotten about him. He didn’t give up, it seems. Too bad for him. He was asking for it."
