Loving how differently Cell and Gohan came out in this chapter (the parallels between them were strong in the original series, so this is a fun twist). Gast's universe has long been one of the more interesting yet Optimistic ones in concept, and it's turning into one of the series' highlights.

I'm gonna guess XXI vs Goku gets ruined here. XXI absorbs Gast, but Gast influences XXI enough from the inside for Goku to win in the end.

Well, that answers most of our questions, but is still a total bummer.

I'm gonna GUESS we get a buncha new Androids after a long back and fourth series of battles between Gero and Goku. The Z Fighters prolly lost, but not having Super Saiyan on this Earth might have meant Gero was in less of a panic to release 17 and 18, and just kept improving models as Goku got stronger.

May not have been the Androids OR the heart virus.
In the last Gast special, we saw Vegeta become a Super Saiyan. I say odds are he came to Earth, and took his revenge on Goku. If I was EXTREMELY optimistic I'd say Vegeta helped train Goku, Gohan and Krillin to help fight Gast and the Androids won anyway. So that's the character arc, yeah? THIS Vegeta is so enraged he attacks Kakarotto (who is immortal) while ignoring Raditz, and gets defeated. It makes sense thematically. Only U18 Vegeta is happy.

It's been set up Old Kai dislikes these Saiyans. It's also been a theme Raditz and Kakarott have an odd couple thing going where one of them is one of the strongest, but immortal and insane while the other gets by on diplomacy and cunning. Making them one person to secure the future of U13 just makes sense.

Of COURSE Goku doesn't have the best air defense. He only learned to fly at 18. Also nice nod to the series when Freeza asks him if he'd rather fight in the air or the ground. Anyone else ever play Mike Tyson's Punch Out, where the guy almost gets up, Mario holds the count, and then the guy flops over and the ref keeps going? I imagine that here. Vegeta tries one more time, but he just can't.

Vegeta hits Goku so hard he gives him amnesia again, Vegeta wins the tournament and wishes Goku's memory restored so he can have his rival back.

"Learn respect?" No, he'll kamehameha himself out and learn nothing. Which is funny, and its a fun twist vs U13. Without Goku, its still a gag manga at first. The superpowers and aliens will come later.
Also Roshi's face in the last panel reminds me of Terrance and Phillip, which made me laugh even harder.

The fanfic "Break Through The Limit" did this and the character's first thought is "DO NOT THINK ABOUT CHI CHI".

Also, on page 414, Bardock of this Universe claimed Raditz died at the first opportunity, and I think this might be it. Also gotta point out the obvious: Vegeta's matches are tailor made for highlighting his own personal growth. To be honest I'm more impressed the Kaioken didn't just make Uub look like the last guy to kidnap Kenshiro's girlfriend (her name is Julia, I know).

I LOVE the DB callback, especially since Goku losing that fight to HIS mentor is what set the stage for the next generation to step up. Uub may not realize it but even if he loses he's truly following in his master's footsteps in that regard.

Cooler and Freeza being like "It's been almost 30 years, fine, we just want extra planets of our own" is totally in-character, and them admitting Ginyu is more effective is a solid W for Ginyu. Kinda wanna see what Jeice, Burter and Reacoom think of this. "YEAH, THE CAPTAIN'S IN CHARGE! FREE PROMOTIONS AND ICE CREAM! IN YOUR FACE, COOLER SQUAD!!"

As for Majin Vegeta vs SS2 Goku: Vegeta himself said after sucker-punching Goku that their fight still wasn't settled. If he won't consider that a win, why should anyone else?

Then Broly went on to destroy the Universe, then got abducted by the Vargas (against his will, which says something bad is up with the Vargas), then went berserk again only to get beaten by Vegetto, then used as a prop in an excuse to show off Bra at SS2, and then kicked out of the narrative over a decade ago.

This would have been an amazing special of it gave us SOMETHING of Broly's character. I get that some of the appeal is he's the only way to do a "Man vs Nature" story in Dragon Ball but the point remains the only reason to bring him back is to maybe tell things from his perspective. Why he's so mad, why he's so ready to attack a Vegetto that is comically obviously not Kakarotto in the tournament, some reason to bring him back after he was written out in the first round.

Even that last panel. Broly has no idea what happened. Give him a thought bubble. "Kakarotto and Vegeta failed again! I'm still not dead, and if I have to wipe this universe clean to drive them out, I'll find them!"

In some cases, it is. What DBM has done in particular with Pan, Bra, Uub, Raditz and ZenBuu is to be commended. I am not denying that.

What I said in a previous comment still holds true: we NEED more of why Broli. He's out of the narrative and has been for years. This story has no new insight to his character other than "I killed them all! Muahhaha!" Which was a mini-comic made years ago.

I like DBM, the art in this chapter is great, but after things like U18 Pan not understanding why her counterpart's dad won't violate tournament rules to save his daughter's life in an earlier special, this kind of story I think gives people Bojack Special flashbacks. DBM has PROVEN they can give us more and logically we come to expect that.

Contrast this special to the ZenBuu fanfic. ZenBuu doesn't just kill the heroes, he explains his motives and writes a classic "Little sh---" song about how much he hates Gotenks. Which pays off later in the comic when he powers them up just to humiliate them again.

And so far, loathe as I am to admit it, DBS did SOMETHING with Broli as a character. DBM had a similar chance here which I think is wasted.

What COULD make this chapter more interesting is some sort of inner monologue for Broli. Yeah, he's a mute berserker (except for "Kakarott!!") but give SOMETHING of Broli's character like in the ZenBuu fanfic.
Maybe something about still holding a grudge against Kakarott because they befriend Vegeta and Buu while Broli just gets thrown into the sun? Maybe him acting to make Paragus proud in their vengeance (capped off once the Universe is destroyed by Broli, freezing and alone, asking if his father is proud of for being the ultimate revenge), shades of Gohan and Cell carrying out their fathers' wishes beyond their deaths.
Broli is out of the series anyway by this point, why not give him a mini-arc or setup for his Vegetto fight here? 1 Replie(s)

Broli's without his biggest trigger here: There's no Kakarotto.

In EVERY instance we've seen him in this comic, he's triggered by Kakarotto. From the adaptation of the movies (okay it was Goku's kid who looks just like him once) to the tournament. Dumb luck he drew Vegetto (who started the fight by saying he WAS Kakarotto) as his first opponent. If Broly drew, say, ZenBuu, maybe he'd act more reasonably?

I see Broli here as the ultimate nihilist: The thing that made me mad once is gone, now EVERYTHING must go. Also shades of that thing dads say: "I'm not mad. I'm just disappointed".

Buu of all people calling Gotenks a "great hero" and asking for his help is... oddly touching, considering in canon they started off fighting each other as proxies for Babidi and Goku. You get a real feeling that the childishness of Buu and Gotenks SHOULD make them good friends.

Edited to say: Buu having a combination of Piccolo's and Gotenks' stances with the ones from that first iconic Goku vs Vegeta duel is a nice, understated touch.

Maybe Buu with everyone still isn't enough because unlike ZenBuu it's still a childlike mind, one that isn't as compatible with Piccolo's when it comes to using the magic?
Maybe SSJ3 and fusions inside wear off, weakening Buu?
Maybe Broly fires him into the sun? Or gets so mad he punches the Goku out of Buu a la Gohan vs Cell?

Its nice to see them coming up with a unique plan. Really keeps the feel of the show even if we know they're gonna lose (some of the better video game what ifs do this too).

And Goku's face as he's about to be absorbed is a lotta fun.

In Cell's universe it is actually stated that the reason Cell won was because Vegeta decided not to shoot at Cell during the beam struggle. In Bojack's it's because Goku didn't teleport to save Gohan. And here it's just a stroke of luck that Broli missed the sun (I mean, somebody coulda checked up on that but this is Dragonball).

This is one of the things I hope the comic addresses about U18 Goku. "Man, how'd those other "me"s screw up? LETTING Krillin kill Vegeta? Haha that's crazy!" Or somesuch.

Maybe Goku isn't sensing Broli's ki, but King Kai just told him "Dude Broli just blew up New Namek" or something?

I'm aware. Point still stands. Maybe Broly is the only thing LEFT in U20. Heck for all we know Goku and Vegeta were ready to teleport back for revenge just before the Vargas found him. I'm still thinking the story is eventually going to go to "All the Universes get some sort of happy end".

Okay, so in the Budokai Tenkaichi (or Sparking!) they did a what-if story where Buu won, he destroyed the universe, and was all alone.

Is that what we're getting here but with Broli? Where the Universe just gets sent to the afterlife, and Broli's all that's left?

Because if SO, it means something potentially HUGE for DBM: The Vargas can't access the afterlife. Otherwise they'd have more guys.

This is actually something I've assumed we'd see at some point, the Multiverse Tournament somehow being the catlyst to setting things right in Universes that "went bad".

So now we have Dabra and Buu as maybe less awful then Babidi, the girls vs Bojack, possibly Raditz overthrowing Vegeta. That's not considering what happens to Vegetto or Freeza (Ginyu could be a threat or just wish Goku back). Precedent for VERY interesting story possibilities here. Were the Vargas up to this all along?

I think I see what (U16) Bra is getting at.

It's not the raw strength she craves anymore. She'd been stood up to by (U18) Bra. Righteously. And found wanting.

U18 Bra risked her own life to talk down a super-maniac because, power levels or no, she was RIGHT. And it's only because our Universe 18 HAS a Goku and redeemed Vegeta that Bra took the chance. YES, U16 Bra should've listened to Gohan. YES, it's a flaw she didn't get it until another version of herself called her out. But it's still a great moment for U18, our canon universe, and I for one am liking where this is going.

I didn't know Vegeta not knowing SS2 was a fan debate. I read the Viz translation, where after Goku beats Yakon Vegeta muses "Kakarott mastered SS2 as well" or somesuch.

I could be mistaken. It STILL begs the question of how Bra is different from U18 Vegeta or how U11 Vegeta beat Babidi.

Vegeta in canon (Universe 18) murders an entire stadium full of people, breaks Babidi's control, and still has the M on his forehead when he sacrifices himself. From then on he's SS2 with no explanation, so it IS possible.

Actually makes one wonder how things went down in U11. Apparently Vegeta there did the same thing with no SS2 (or maybe just SS2 but no 3 or fusion doomed them vs Buu). 2 Replie(s)

Buu being fun. I mean, a little Saiyan girl massacred a lot of dudes, but here's Buu of all things being light-hearted (the Sharpie on Babidi's face is just WIN) and just having a laugh. Good to be back to the main tournament, it's been 3 years since Babidi's Trap.

U13 Kakarotto plus Talking Heads made me think of Sean Schemmel's angry voice singing "Same As It Ever Was" or "People Like Us". I giggled like a schoolchild for about 10 minutes, thank you.

Yeah it makes sense we'd get something like this (I was expecting U13 Kakarotto, but the point is the same). Makes Vegeta's rant on page578 and page579 even more heartwarming, somehow.

Gohan goes from a big, lovable guy (getting slight Masamune Shirow vibes in that 3rd panel) and then the GLARE.
I imagine his voice getting a little deeper, his form getting noticably less casual. "This looks like a job...for SAIYAMAN."

Arcady Picardi is DEFINITELY drawing on a Frank Quietly "All Star Superman" influence here. It's a great fit for Gohan, mild-mannered schlub until things get serious and then he looks and acts the ultimate hero.
A lot of artists (Toriyama included) just change the facial expressions and hairstyle, but to see where the changes occur in Gohan's body language and demeanor is a treat.

YES, Gohan. You've known this man since you were five years old. You've seen him try to destroy the Earth, get killed by Freeza, let Cell power up and obliterate a stadium. Hell there's even a dark future where YOU raised his kid. You ought to know this.

I've liked this art style since the Gast special, the final page especially, and I love this too. The body language is spot on (shades of how Goku and Vegeta interact to close the Buu arc).
That third panel is hilarious. Goku is finally tired after 20 years of Vegeta whining about being one step behind. "Just get there, man! Geez!" Which leads into Goku in the last panel with that "Here he goes again..." expression. Great stuff.

That green in Vegeta's eye says so much.
Also the faces are so well done. Goku looks like he spends a lot of time smiling or eating, Vegeta has an almost permanent scowl. The character detail in that is astounding.

Right in the feels, man. One panel of why Universe 18 is the best.

Was gonna say this before (when the U16 vs U18 talk was going on last chapter), but since this chapter has made U18 the focus I'll put it here.

The main reason, from a writing standpoint, U18 has been left a little adrift in this manga is that we KNOW most of the characters. Vegeta's character arc is wrapped up after Buu (a fact he even comments on during his fights), and Goku and Piccolo have arguably been the same character-wise since Cell.

Pan, Uub, Gohan and Bra are the U18 characters that can grow a little. Contrast with U16 or U13 or even U9 that we know little about (whatever happened to that Other Trunks?), necessitating the writers to tell us about THEM.

I'm happy to see Pan's perspective demonstrated a little more. U16 Pan never met a Goku. U18 has seen a grandfather who doted on her, who was kind and gentle, and now seeing him fight, she is scared. Then in the tournament she meets the evil Kakarott and, well, you know the rest (this actually should be its own special: what exactly IS going through poor Pan's head when she transforms?).

Hopefully this'll come up later in the tournament.

TLDR: Pan's perspective is something DBM needs more of (and seriously, what DID happen to U9 Trunks?).

Love the subtleties in the art.

Uub is taken aback, Gohan is calmly analytical, Pan is terribly innocent (stuffed rabbit is a great touch). Heck, the fact that Goku and Vegeta are fighting exactly the same way as they did in the Buu series highlights their Saiyan stubbornness. I'm digging this.

Bra's right but for the wrong reasons. Not "It's personally unfair to ME" moreso "It's kinda a raw deal to be given this much power as a child". Not how she meant it, but an interesting phrase in my opinion.

Also this makes page364 and page881 REALLY good insights into Vegeto and Bra. Especially Bra saying "Wishes. We make them all the time back home." It's a cliche that the DragonBalls make it so stuff like this has no consequence, but its fun to see that dealt with.

Vegetto could have said "It's okay, we'll wish them back with the Dragonballs and work on your rage." Or "Do this again and I'll send you to King Kai forever." Instead he just goes with "Before you become more powerful than me I'll kill you." That's an overraction in my book.

Bra needs guidance more than anything else. Their relationship seems better later (before Bra kills Zangya) but the emotional scarring is still there, at least for Bra (Vegetto probably thought it wouldn't amount to much, which is in character for him).

Keep in mind Vegetto wanted to send newborn Bra and Pan into the time chamber on page297. To train them and make them stronger. As I said before, some of this is Vegetto's own fault. 1 Replie(s)

They might do the thing with SS2 Bra the manga used to do with kid Gohan. Lose your mind, beat the bad guy, forget it in two seconds. In that sense, Bra has NO IDEA what she's just done. Which makes Vegetto's overraction more damaging to her.

I've compared Bra to Dark Phoenix as a joke before but I actually mean it. When Chris Claremont was asked why so much power corrupted Jean Grey and not someone like Dr. Strange or Thor Claremont said it was because Jean just GOT IT whereas Strange or Thor had to work and train for it.

Same thing we're seeing here. Bra is following in the footsteps of Freeza, Brolly or Cell as a creature BORN uber powerful with no sense of having EARNED IT. Jean Grey as Dark Phoenix with Gohan's origin story and Brolly's murderous rage.

Actually quite interesting. Could go on and on about Bra (as deconstruction of what most fans wanted for Gotenks AND this all being Vegetto's fault) but the core of her character, to me anyway, is Dragonball Dark Phoenix. 3 Replie(s)

Liking this chapter a lot, but looking very much forward to the new special. Picardi's artwork is that sort of "Dragonball in a different art style" we frankly don't get enough of. The fact that it's more like my beloved American comics makes me biased, I know.

Goten's thing in GT was he was into the ladies, and I think DBM had him trying to escape by going to his girlfriend. It's always been, to me, a way to differentiate him from the fighters, businessmen, and scholars the rest of the Saiyans are.

I also like that the second panel his eyes might be going exactly where you expect.

That's been happening to Goten since 1996. I have a card of him from the GT era and he's in the Wolf Fang Fist pose. Make his hair not blonde and yeah, he's Yamcha.

Y'know, this actually shows a lot about Bra and Gohan's characters.
Gohan, again, because he obviously didn't like to talk about Bojack.
Bra because she's dealt with these people before. Bojack killing Pan (her best friend) can be looked at in a different light now that she's faced these people. If it were, say, Bojack killing Krillin or Videl we'd be okay with Goku or Gohan losing their minds. Much as some hate to hear it, Bra's character is making more and more sense as these things go on.
Page 364 is much different since this has been revealed. Bra has fought these guys before, and also Vegetto threatened her life. Look at that scene again more closely given this information.

That's a good point, actually. THESE guys seem to see Bojack as a great warrior dealt a bad hand, WE (and most of the heroes) know he's a violent, child-killing lunatic. Maybe they've been lied to about their predecessor? Goten's snark is great and all, but this also reveals something about Gohan. He obviously didn't want to talk about the time he went to a fun tournament with his (dad's) friends just to almost get crushed to death by an alien space pirate he had to punch through. That's why his own little brother has never heard the story.
In fact, reading page 126 is a little harder now.

Possibly related to the Potara? That old plot point about the Potara being blasphemous or something since its only meant for Kaioshins. That could explain why these guys never bothered with any of the other universes (could also explain a LOT about these U16 specials and why that never happens anywhere else).

I've always loved the DBM design for Goten. Just the right mix of the End of Z/ GT to look familiar, but still his own. He actually looks like a distinct character, instead of too much like Goku or Gohan.

Yeah Bra. You're a failed hero. It's okay, it worked for Wolverine for years and you've got dragon balls. All the damage can be erased and its a learning experience.

Bra dropping some truth bombs. This is U18's overall strength and I'm happy to see it developed. I didnt expect it from BRA of all characters. It's a nice touch. Feels more like canon Dragonball (like Tien coming out of nowhere to challenge Cell) than most fanworks are used to.
