L'histoire de "Promesse" commence en 2016, en relisant Dragon Ball je me suis rendu compte que bah... Grand-père Gohan n'a plus été mentionné nulle part âpres le combat contre Vegeta. Je trouvais ça d'autant plus frustrant que même l'anime n'a pas eu l'idée de faire réapparaître Gohan dans l'autre monde dans les fillers.
Alors je me suis dit : Et si je la faisait moi-même cette rencontre entre Goku et l'homme le plus important de sa vie.
Ça traînait un peu jusqu'en 2020, où avec le confinement, je m'y suis mis sérieusement. J'ai tout écrit et dessiné entre 2020 et 2021, j'ai tout scanné et nettoyé sur Photoshop. Tout était prêt, il ne manquait juste les textes à mettre dans les bulles. Sauf que Bam! Mon pc me lâche et toutes mes données ont été perdus. J'avais plus la force de refaire tout le clean et c'est resté en stand by.
Jusqu'au 8 mars 2024, où on apprend la mort d'Akira Toriyama. J'ai tellement pleuré ce jour-là, et comme un dernier hommage à mon artiste préféré, cela m'a motivé à terminer une bonne fois pour toutes ce One Shot.

Comme beaucoup de mes a-prioris sur Dragon Ball, je me base sur la première traduction du manga où le vieux Kaioshin ne dit pas "mauvais", mais "puissant" (de mémoire).
"Il n'était pas aussi puissant que Buu".
Pour moi cette phrase allait de soit : dire qu'un hypothétique ennemi du passé était plus fort que Buu, c'était rendre l'ennemi en cours moins important.
Buu est l'être le plus puissant de l'univers et de tous les temps.

We're finally here.

I first started reading this comic in 2008, (you can find my posts from back then on some of the early pages,) and for 17 years I have checked in weekly to see this story progress. The amount of dedication Salagir has shown to this project, and the perseverance to keep going despite countless pressures; artists moving on, the lack of money a fancomic raises, the commitment to releasing multiple pages per week for almost two decades, is astounding. Thank you Salagir for everything you have accomplished, and thank you the wider DBM team.

I wonder if the genius of this comic is fully recognised. Salagir would have had to have known from the start the end fight would be Goku vs Xxi, the semi-finals Goku vs Vegeta, the quarter-finals Goku vs Uub. He then had to design the whole tournament to ask essentially every What-If scenario and every X vs Y question the DBZ fandom has had for decades. Was Nail stronger than Recuum? What would a fifth form Freeza look like? Why were the future Androids weaker than the main timeline Androids? Could Cell beat Dabra? Does Krillin's keinzan beat Salza's salza blade? What if Goku never turned good, what if all of the Namekians fused? Salagir even used Dr Raichi's ghosts, Tapion, and now Xxi to pose additional questions with regards to Broly, the Saiyans, Hildegarn and Janemba. The Janemba one in particular sits with me - Salagir said 17 years ago that Janemba couldn't reasonably be at this tournament due to being uncontrollable, but he must have known that Janemba was going to exist towards the finale. He spent nearly 20 years keeping that secret.

This comic is a love letter not just to DBZ, but to the DBZ fandom, and could only have been written by someone with a deep, fundamental understanding of what makes DBZ great, of what makes people keep coming back to this story year after year. I do not think I have ever seen a fan-led project have anywhere near as much earnest heart as this.

Now - it might be that the conclusion still takes some years - but as we are reaching the conclusion I want to put on record the years of absolute joy this project has brought me. I reread it in its entirety every year or two. I think it will stand the testiment of time. And I cannot wait to see how it ends.

It could very well work against an opponent like Nappa but the opposite is also true. Both can be valid since neither outcome aren't contradicted by the manga (the mafuba has never been used against someone stronger than 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai Piccolo).
Think of it like the Dragon Balls which are stated to grant ANY wish but got more and more limitations through the manga.
I prefer this version of Mafuba since it also explains why such a powerful technique hasn't been used after Piccolo.

There's already simple explanations for why it's not used after Piccolo.

1. Only Roshi, Piccolo/Kami, and Tien knew it.

2. Piccolo died protecting Gohan before he could really even attempt to use it against Nappa.

3. Tien knew the risk outweighed the reward after seeing Roshi die using it, King Piccolo escaping the bottle, and Piccolo Jr reversing it against Kami.

4. As for the Androids and Buu the Saiyans wanted to fight the threats, not go for cheap ways for victories.

Honestly, I love how Raditz can actually use his brain to get around being weaker, he even created the contact lens that allows saiyans to reach great ape without the moon.

And something to remember, Old Kaioshin said that Raditz is BY FAR stronger than South, it's just only usable against evil. And he's not a little bit stronger, but MUCH stronger. And factually speaking, South IS one of the powerhouses in this tournament (the tippy top are a whole other league sure, but there's very few in that actual weight class, if they're S+, then he's become S- vs evil)

With this, Raditz has officially become universal level strength, he's a specialised weapon of good now (against his wishes hah), outside of super continuity there likely isn't a villain that can match him (he's more intelligent/cautious/cowardly than South to not fall for stuff like being absorbed maybe and even then his power matches kid Buu, and that what if WAS Old Kai cutting off the power-up early)

It'll be interesting how he will interact with the story, as long as the writers don't forget about him or what they've established, this could be really cool.

Then again, I've always been team Raditz, so I might be a bit biased, but going from what we've shown, Raditz should FINALLY BE A THREAT!

Purity of heart and "good/bad" are not the same thing. Good and bad are relative concepts, but purity of heart is not. Old Kai is a good person depending on who you ask, but he does not have a pure heart.
Goku has a pure heart, but if you asked Dr. Gero, he'd tell you that he was an evil menace that needs to be crushed.

Also, am I supposed to believe that this silly mental block works on those who are "good" but are being used by evil for the sake of doing evil against their knowledge/control?

Who decides what is good? Who decides what is bad? Raditz? Old Kai? Some magical enchantment that rates people on a black and white karmic scale?

Humans are basically fighting a losing battle, besides Vegeta as you said, the Saiyans have their Oozaru forms, Freeza has an army with guys like Cui who has a power of 18 thousand, Zarbon and Dodoria who are even stronger, the Ginyu Force who again are stronger than the previous ones mentioned and finally Freeza (although I doubt very much that she wants to get involved with beings so below him)

I just wanted to say this might be my favorite fan manga on DBM besides obviously the main comic. The pacing isn't always perfect but I feel like the story has some unique concepts and themes that standout over some of the other stories going on right now. I also like the other story taking place on Namek but something about this one I like a little more.

I love it. I wanted so badly for Super to go in this direction. Mystic Gohan was the peak so everyone figured out how to reach that stage. Since it isn't a genetic lottery transformation, other characters (/wave Piccolo, Tien) can suddenly be back in the mix again.

They've done something similar when they copied Golden Great Ape from GT/Z Filler and claimed to have come up with the form all by themselves quite literally in the comic.

He sort of implied it last page where he said this was decided before DBS, so you have to remember that HE came up with it first OK, even though this sort of "Don't let power leak from your body" stuff is very basic fantasy martial arts stuff.

les speciaux ne sont pas trop un problemes, meme si a mon gouts 5 speciaux sur les 6 derniers chapitres c'est beaucoup trop. pour moi le vrai probleme est le manque de communication de l'equipe sur la trame principale. un simple " nous sommes trop occupés pour le moments pour avancer à un rythme d'ou les speciaux" nous aurais suffit. au moins nous savons pourquoi autant de speciaux d'affilés. la on a aucunes infos...
