This is something that bothered me about the original. One neck snap doesn't instantly kill people; assuming it stops blood flow, it takes about half a minute before the brain starts getting damaged, and blood will also still be pumping for a while.
In Namek, Recoome broke Gohan's neck. Perfect Cell also broke Krillin's neck. Yes, they were both mortally wounded, but a Senzu bean was enough to bring them back to full health

Gast is, I will say, the most balanced fighter in this tournament, with all four of ki, fighting ability, magic ability and wisdom.

Bra on the other hand has a lot more ki, and is probably a better fighter too, but she's still maturing and she has no magic at all.

So she must have realized this and seen that Gast had a better chance than her to defeat XXIII, and that fulfilling her promise to the heloites is more important than being the winner of the tournament, and did the adult thing.

Should have fought him anyway though, just to try, he wanted to try too.
